Prepare for 8 days of enthralling encounters, as we uncover the lesser known trail of Massim archipelago. Conceive tangible plans with community leaders of Milne Province, in the eastern islands of Papua New Guinea. Familiarise with tribal lore, witness ancient magic and experience the sheer magnificence of untamed nature, through heightened senses. Intertwined with modern ideas and hi-tech resolve, you will be privy to workshops in the wilderness and intimate negotiations that assure local equity within the regenerative economy of Oceania.
An insightful evening in the notorious capital of Papua New Guinea, Port Moresby. If you have heard anything about Pom City, known locally as "Pot Mosbi" in Tok Pisin, it wouldn't be unusual to feel apprehensive. A social melting pot, this waterfront bustling town suffers the symptoms of low government capacity, corruption, economic inequality and pervasive tension between ancient tradition within a capitalist system. In stark contrast with the ever-publicised petty crime and violence of downtown, Port Moresby is laced with safe and somewhat decadent enclaves for explorers in transit. A 2 minute private shuttle from Jacksons International Airport, sits the perfect place for an overnight layover. Spend sunset gazing over the Owen Stanley Ranges, then get to know fellow participants during the Massim Kula briefing and formal dinner at Vue Restaurant. Unwind at the pool bar under the stars as the live music hums - but don't forget your beauty sleep!
After a short flight into Alotau, Milne Bay, you will be greeted with sincere joy by our expert local team. Feel the vibrant energy across the sea as you take part in the most significant cultural ceremony of the Massim region. Staying with our cherished partners Kobala Falls Retreat, the unique opportunity to witness Lamhaga Village participate in the sacred canoe ceremony is yours to experience alongside the community. As the sunsets after the celebration, together with our local hosts we will meander up river by small boat, followed by a pleasant hike under dense canopy to our secluded location. For two nights, we will replenish at our private guesthouse surrounded by virgin rainforest. Ecotours include a trek to the exclusive Lamhaga waterfalls (as the first global guests to be welcomed here) and morning birdwatching with local experts of the region (with a chance to sight rare endemic species, including Papua New Guinea's iconic bird of paradise). Additional activities to enjoy at your leisure include swimming in the fresh water of Lamhaga creeks, harvesting organic produce from the superb gardens for meals, weaving with community and partaking in our hosts speciality - fishing for dinner!
Experience some of the least traversed islands of Melanesia aboard our nimble expedition vessel. This deeply rewarding adventure through the Samarai archipelago will connect you with small, welcoming villages and private beaches to explore before arriving to our far-flung destination, Gonubalabala Island. Home to Nydia and Nelson's family, the pristine marine ecosystem is also a sanctuary for a large population of manta rays. Together, we will formalise intentions to establish an environmental protected area and progress toward the launch of a locally-owned dive centre. Your contribution as a guest provides pivotal investment into the development of eco bungalows onsite and crucial market exposure.
